自由でフレンドリーな雰囲気、それが私たちの研究所です私たちが研究する「防災」は、社会と密に関わる分野です。大きな自然災害が発生したら真っ先に調査に出向き、被災対応のサポートをしたり、被害の原因究明を行います。私自身は緊急地震速報の研究をしていますが、研究所には理学・工学・社会科学など、多様な分野の専門家が同居しており、わからないことがあったら気軽に質問できます。とてもフレンドリーな雰囲気で、社会に役立つ研究ができることに“やりがい”を感じています。大学では建築の耐震構造を専攻、その原因である地震のメカニズムを物理学の観点から解明する研究に移行していった山田助教。そんな自由で幅広い研究も防災研究所ならでは。Invasion Biology as a new discipline of Humanosphere ScienceHave you ever had a crayfish(アメリカザリガニ) as a pet during your childhood? Have you ever seen a nutria(ヌートリア) swimming in Kamogawa? Despite the popularity, both animals in fact are notorious invasive alien species(IAS) that were introduced into Japan in early 20th century and spread rapidly throughout the entire country since then. Unlike those with larger body size, a group of tiny, nearly invisible IAS is sneaking into Japan without drawing too much attention: invasive ants. The invasive ants are capable of causing extinctions of native species, reducing biodiversity, competing with native organisms, and eventually altering habitats. To mitigate impacts of invasive ants, Dr. Chin-Cheng Yang and his research team at Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere(RISH) seek to understand various mechanisms underlying their success (genetics, behavior and adaptation), with an ultimate goal to provide decision support for managing invasive ants in Japan. Recently, Dr. Yang may have found a way to manage the invasive yellow crazy ant (YCA), arguably the world's most devastating ant species, in a more efficient manner. In most ant species, workers are non-reproductive and primarily engaged in nest maintenance activities. The workers of YCA, however, are able to produce trophic eggs that serve as food for other members in the nest. Such behavior may assist YCA in overcoming unfavorable conditions (i.e., paucity of food) and hence improve its survival in the eld. This nding suggests that suppressing ovary development of worker by using reproduction-inhibiting chemicals as a major control method might represent an alternative strategy to target YCA invasion. More research outcomes regrading invasive ants are currently being generated in Dr. Yang’s laboratory. So, interested in studying invasive ants?
